Gonstead Technique

An Educational Guide To A Precise,
The Gonstead System is a particular method of chiropractic analysis and adjustment developed through decades of clinical observation and outcome-based refinement. It focuses on finding the exact spinal segments that aren’t moving or aligning properly (often called subluxations) and correcting them with precise, gentle, single-segment adjustments. The goal is simple: restore normal biomechanics and nerve function so the body can heal efficiently. While our practice does not currently offer Gonstead chiropractic treatments, we’re sharing this overview to help you understand the approach. Having said that, we may add a Gonstead-trained practitioner in the future.

Why The Gonstead Approach Stands Out
Whole-spine perspective: Symptoms are assessed in the context of how the entire spine and related joints function together.
Objective, layered analysis: Multiple assessment methods cross-verify findings before any adjustment is considered.
Specificity over routine: Care targets the exact level and direction of dysfunction; no generalised “one-size-fits-all” protocols.
Efficiency of care: The intent is to adjust only what needs changing, as little as necessary, and allow the body to stabilise.
How A Gonstead Evaluation Works
A Gonstead assessment builds a comprehensive picture of spinal health by combining several complementary methods:
Health History
Past injuries, repetitive stress, sports, work ergonomics, sleep, exercise, nutrition, and previous treatments can all influence spinal function and balance.
Visualisation
Posture, gait, head/shoulder/hip alignment, spinal curves, and muscle tone patterns are observed for subtle signs of imbalance.
Instrumentation
A dual-probe thermographic instrument (often called a Nervoscope) compares skin temperature along both sides of the spine. Asymmetries may indicate inflammation and nerve irritation.
Static Palpation
With the spine at rest, the chiropractor feels for any tenderness, swelling (edema), tissue texture changes, and muscle tone differences.
Motion Palpation
Each spinal segment is assessed through movement to detect where and in what direction motion is restricted, creating a three-dimensional understanding of misalignment.
X-Ray Analysis (when clinically indicated)
Standing, weight-bearing radiographs may be used to evaluate alignment, disc and joint integrity, posture under gravity, and to rule out pathology or fracture. Imaging is used judiciously and only when appropriate. By cross-referencing these findings, a Gonstead chiropractor determines whether chiropractic care is suitable, which segment(s) require correction, and the exact direction and line of drive for any adjustment.
The Gonstead Adjustment
A Gonstead adjustment is a specific, purposeful correction designed to restore normal alignment and motion to a single spinal segment. It is typically a gentle, direct movement and not a series of generalised manipulations. The principle is to “find it, fix it, and leave it alone,” allowing the body to recalibrate and heal without unnecessary repeated force on stabilised areas.
What Patients Typically Experience
  • Full-spine assessment, not just the area of pain
  • Clear communication about what is found and why an adjustment is (or isn’t) recommended
  • Targeted, specific adjustments based on objective analysis
  • An emphasis on efficient progress and reducing care as stability returns
Training And Expertise
Gonstead chiropractors undergo extensive training in spinal biomechanics, analysis, and specificity. Beyond university qualifications, many pursue ongoing postgraduate seminars and workshops dedicated to this method to refine skills, safety, and clinical outcomes.
Will We Offer Gonstead Care Here?
Marsden Park Chiropractic does not currently have a Gonstead practitioner. However:
  • We value the method’s emphasis on specificity and objective analysis.
  • We may explore adding a Gonstead-trained clinician in the future.
  • In the meantime, we’re happy to educate, discuss whether the approach aligns with your goals, and, if appropriate, help you find reputable Gonstead resources or providers.
Is The Gonstead System Right For You?
The Gonstead approach may appeal if you’re looking for:
  • A thorough, evidence-informed analysis of the whole spine
  • Precise, minimal, and individualised adjustments
  • A focus on addressing root causes rather than treating symptoms
If and when we add a Gonstead-trained practitioner, we’ll update our patients and provide details on scheduling and evaluation steps.
